Can Golden Retrievers Have Cream Cheese?

Roberto Manzotti

Cream cheese is a delicious treat and an invaluable ingredient in various recipes.

I, personally, love to dip my potato chips in cream cheese, put some on a bagels, and sometimes have it straight. It’s somewhat a staple in my household. And, of course, with everything that I put in my mouth, my dog’s interested in it as well.

However, I like to be cautious with my dog consuming human food.

Contrary to popular belief, some common and harmless items in your household and pantry can wreak havoc on your dog’s system and can even be toxic to Fido.

So, you should always look up human food to see if it’s safe for your dog to consume or not.

In this blog post, I’ll answer the question, “Can dogs have cream cheese?” in as much detail as I possibly can.

So, let’s jump right in!

Can Goldies Have Cream Cheese?

Yes, cream cheese is safe for your Golden Retriever to consume. dog cheese

However, keep in mind that your furry friend should only have a taste of it.

Cream cheese is an excellent solution when you want your furry friend to swallow a pill but, at the same time, it’s not really something you want to give your dog on a daily basis or include in his diet on the regular.

This is because cream cheese is loaded with fat.

According to the American Kennel Club, cream cheese has several nutritional benefits for your furry friends because it is high in calcium, essential fatty acids, protein, vitamin A, and B-complex vitamins.

Keep in mind that too much of cream cheese can cause problems.

How Much Cream Cheese Is Safe for My Goldy to Consume?

Cream cheese is something that’s not naturally available to dogs when they live in the wild.

So, this means that your dog’s body isn’t well-equipped to deal with such a fatty treat. While it’s completely safe for your dog, you should given it to your furry friend occasionally as a treat and in small portions.

Too much cream cheese can lead to digestive problems, obesity and in some cases pancreatitis in your Goldy.

So, you should keep it for SOS purposes only and don’t give your dog cream cheese no matter how he looks at you.

The Problem With Feeding Your Golden Retriever Too Much Cream Cheese

You should know that giving your Golden Retriever dairy products, in general, is not a good idea. This is because most dogs are lactose intolerant and don’t do too well with dairy in their diet.

If your dog tends to bloat up when you give him some dairy, you should definitely keep him away from the cream cheese.

That being said, you can still use cream cheese for SOS purposes such as getting your dog to swallow a pill.

If your Golden Retriever hasn’t had cream cheese before, a good idea is to start by giving your furry friend small quantities to understand how his body reacts to it. If your dog gets diarrhea or faces any other problems, just stop feeding it to him and call the vet.

Cream cheese low in fat is still a better option to give to your furry friend.

But, you should keep in mind that cheese is high in fat and sugar. You should only give to your dog as a treat and should never replace it as a meal option! Feeding your dog a diet rich in fat won’t just harm your pup’s waistline! It can also cause other problems.

So, giving your dog only small amounts of cream cheese on occasion is advisable.

Being Safe: How You Can Feed Cream Cheese to Fido

You can give small quantities of cream cheese to your dog straight from the can. Most people give cream cheese to their dogs as a treat during the training period, or when they want them to swallow a pill.

The creamy snack can also act as frosting on your doggy friend’s birthday cake!

While you can hide the pill in cream cheese for stubborn dogs, you can also lightly coat the pill with the treat for less stubborn ones.

However, don’t use the cream cheese trick too often or your dog will catch up to speed and either refuse to take the medicine without some cream cheese or not have cream cheese at all because he has associated it with medicine.

Dogs are really intelligent that way.

Summing Up: Can Golden Retrievers Have Cream Cheese?

Yes, cream cheese is safe for Golden Retrievers to consume.

But, it should be given to your doggy friend in limited quantity as it is high in fat and large amounts of it can eventually cause your dog to get sick by creating health conditions such as diabetes.

So, it is safe to use cream cheese when trying to get your dog to swallow a pill.

Cream cheese may not suit your dogs as most dogs are lactose intolerant. This means that you should start by feeding your dog a small portion of the yummy cheese and observe your dog. If your dog shows and aversive signs, call the vet immediately.
