Do Rabbits Eat Zinnias

Modified: Jan 27, 2019 by Andreea Coleman · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Zinnia is a genus name given to shrubs or sub-shrubs of flowering plants that belong to the daisy family and sunflower tribe. Members of this genus have long stemmed, sun-loving as well as bright flowers.

These annual flowering plants have various flower colors (they may be red, orange, purple, white, chartreuse, or lilac) and shapes. They are easy to grow, and they can withstand even the hot summer temperatures. These make them good garden flowers.

If you have bunnies that freely roam in your garden, it is important to know which plants including flowers that these pets may damage to safeguard them.

If you are uncertain whether the will damage Zinnias or not, the good news is that you can plant these annuals since rabbits don’t like Zinnias [1] and they are likely to cause very little damage. They are among the deer and rabbit-resistant annual flowers you can grow.

Other sources also confirm that the “common zinnias (Z. elegans) and lower-growing creeping zinnia (Z. angustifolia) are among the plants that rabbits avoid.”[2]

However, it is normal for these pets to nibble Zinnia flowers or leaves since these pets can munch almost any plant that they come across. Also, young bunnies that are still experimenting on various tastes and textures may often munch these plants. However, they are unlikely to cause much damage.

Conclusion

When choosing good ornamental or landscaping plants, always go for the rabbit-resistant ones if you allow this pet to access your garden or backyard.

Alternatively, you could use the various ways to keep these pets away including the use of repellents, fencing and so on. However, go for a method that will not harm your furry friends.
