With over 20 different species, petunias are flowering plants that originated from South America, and they are commonly found in gardens (especially their hybrid varieties). They come in a wide range of colors and sizes making them a perfect garden plant and flower mainly for ornamental purposes.

Can rabbits eat petunias

Yes, rabbits eat petunias. They are among your garden flowering plants that your furry friends will nibble from time to time. As Bonnieplants.com notes, “rabbits prefer young, tender shoots and are particularly fond of lettuce, beans, and broccoli. Flowers they like to nibble include gazanias, marigolds, pansies, and petunias.”

You also deserve to know that young bunnies will tend to experiment with anything including plants that rabbits usually do not eat.

On which part they are likely to nibble, Hunker.com notes that “the most ornamental parts of petunias -- the flower heads themselves -- are what the furry pests are most likely to remove during the growing season as they graze in your garden.”

To rule out damage from other animals including the dear and other rodent’s look for droppings (pea-sized) scattered on your garden, examining how the chewing occurred since these pets have both the upper and lower incisors and you expect a clean-cut often at a 45-degree angle.

Also, if they eat the young tender shoots especially at night, i.e., you will find the entire young plant shoot not there, especially while still young.

Preventing your garden against rabbit’s

If your petunias are often damaged by bunnies including wild or your neighbor’s, there are many ways to keep them off your garden. Popular methods include:

  • Netting and fencing
  • Planting them in raised containers or hanging them
  • Remove habitats that shelter or protect them such as nearby hiding places
  • Use the various repellants both commercial or homemade ones. The Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent Concentrate will do the work perfectly well.
  • Plant repellant vegetables such as onions, leeks, garlic, and so on.

Conclusion

Whereas your furry critters may nibble petunias from time to time, do not forget to provide them with their recommended diet and water. Otherwise, they may develop stomach upsets if they overeat of these flowering plants.
