Very often we have to handle gastrointestinal troubles of our dog, especially diarrhea, which is an increase of feces due to water contents increase. It's more frequent and decreases the feces consistance.
The causes of diarrhea are quite many, considering all factors contributing to a good intestinal working.

What to do? Worry?

First we have to look into our dog's habits:

  • change in food
  • too much food (f.i. dog stealing big quantity of bread or biscuits)
  • rewards (especially with pups during training)
Then we need to check if in the feces there are:
  • Parasites
  • mucus
  • blood
  • black colour and bad smell
  • objects like small wood etc.

Last we need to check the frequency, once or twice diarrea is not that serious, but if more often then better to have dog checked by vet. Through a feces test it is possible to highlight eventually parasites or blood or mucus which give and idea of the concerned intestinal area. It can also highlight tapeworm, coccidia, roundworms and others.
Furthermore, via the Elisa test, it is possible to see the parvovirus, cause of a very bad gastroenteritis Other tests: if feces test is not enough, you can always go for a blood test, abdomen xrays and  others.

To avoid:

If your dog just had once or twice diarrea and seems to be fine, don't change food with rice or potatos but ask to your vet. Do not give him pills, nor antibiotics-

To do:

Use some specific dog lactic ferments, reduce the quantity of food and abolish bread, biscuits etc.
Keep an eye on him and if needed consult the vet.
