Back to the Beginning: Breed History of the Corgi Golden Retriever Mix

The origins of the Corgi Golden Retriever mix are still unknown as this breed is a relatively new one.

However, in order to understand the Corgi Golden Retriever better, it is important for you to know more about the parent breeds.

With designer breed dogs, it can be hard to determine which parent they take after, so knowing the essentials for their parent breeds comes in handy when you’re trying to predict the breed’s behavior.

Let’s start.

The Welsh Corgi

This small herding dog finds its origins in Wales, England, and is quite popular all over the world. The dog comes in the following types:

  • Cardigan Welsh Corgi
  • Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Out of the two, the latter is more popular with the people and the former is relatively unpopular and had actually made an appearance in The Kennel Club's list of native breeds that are vulnerable.

As a breed, the Welsh Corgi is known to be used as a herding dog for mainly cattle and sheep. Corgis are known for their intelligence as well as their devotion toward their owners. They make amazing watchdogs and are wildly popular for their cute looks.

These dogs were loved by Queen Elizabeth II who owned several of them.

Golden Retriever

Large and intelligent, the Golden Retriever is used as a search and rescue dog, gun dog, and detection dog. Golden retrievers are trained to be assistance dogs as they have a loving and gentle nature and love to be around people.

Golden Retrievers have a beautiful and dense coat that sheds heavily, and they love to play in the water.

These dogs are one of the most popular breeds in the world and are best known for their loving and loyal nature. They enjoy their time with humans are excellent with kids.

And, they have a naughty streak as well!

All About That Face: Physical Features of the Corgi Golden Retriever Mix

Let’s be real. Looks do matter.

The Corgi Golden Retriever mix is one of the most good-looking and adorable designer dogs out there which is why it steals so many hearts!

Since the dog is a mix of the Golden Retriever and the Corgi, when it comes to appearance, the dog can take after:

  • The Corgi side of the family
  • The Golden Retriever side of the family
  • Be a mix of both

In fact, two puppies from the same litter can turn out to be completely different in the case of designer dogs!

So, how do you predict the looks?

Well, you’ll have to go back to the roots to figure things out.

Golden Retriever Side of the Family

Golden Retrievers are considered to be large dogs. Males are usually bigger in size than females and the following are the averages:

  • Male Golden Retrievers weigh between 65 to 75 pounds and are between 21 to 24 inches in height
  • Female Golden Retrievers weigh between 55 to 65 pounds and are between 20 to 23 inches in height

As the name suggests, these dogs have a golden-colored double coat which keeps them warm and is resistant to water. They also have webbed feet which makes them excellent swimmers.

Corgi Side of the Family

Corgis are on the smaller side of things and the dogs are quite adorable to look at. These dogs have unique physical features and are of two types. Let’s take a look.

  • Male Corgis weigh between 30 to 40 pounds and are between 10 to 12 inches in height
  • Female Golden Retrievers weigh between 55 to 65 pounds and are between 9 to 11 inches in height

These dogs come in various different colors such as brindle, white, orange, blue, and black and have a shorter but smooth coat.

Best of Both Worlds

If your Golden retriever Corgi mix is a mix of the two, the dog will be between 40 to 50 pounds in weight and can grow up to be between 18 to 20 inches in height.

Keep in mind that these numbers aren’t set in stone.

Because the dog is a mixed breed, they generally differ greatly in height and weight. The mix might look like a Golden Retriever but with a short squat body and tiny legs like the Corgi.

All About the Temperament

Let’s take a look at the temperamental traits of the Corgi Golden Retriever, shall we?

Here’s a list.
