As a proud owner of a Golden Retriever, you know your dog loves to participate in family events, like enjoying a long drive with you and traveling to a remote place. They want to be treated as a member of your family and they thrive on attention. When you bring your puppy home, you should train him to like sitting in the car with you while you are driving, so as the dog grows, it will appreciate these activities more and more.
When possible, it is good to include your pup during a family vacation. There is no doubt that a dog-friendly holiday is much better than finding boarding accommodation. But, before you set off, it is reasonable to make a few provisions and you may want to consider some things. The following are tips for traveling with a furry member of your family.
1. Prior to taking your pup on any trip, it is advisable that your dog is reasonably well trained. To avoid your dog running away in a strange environment, it is necessary that your dog understands the basic commands, like sit, stay and come.
2. It is advisable to take your dog to your veterinarian at least two weeks before planning to travel. Your veterinarian can make sure your dog is in good health and has all the necessary vaccines.
3. Once you are convinced that your dog is healthy, you should take all of its papers. In other words, make sure you have the dog health certificate, a dog license, and it vaccination proof.
4. If your pup is suffering from traveling anxiety or carsickness, it is better to acclimatize him or her before planning to travel. At first, let your dog become familiar with the car as it is motionless. Then begin with short trips for about 15 minutes. Be sure to take your dog to a fun place, like a park or a beach. If your dog associates travel by car with fun or treat, the dog will be less reluctance to travel. Never make your dog first car ride a trip to a veterinarian.
5. Make sure your dog always wears a strong collar with his identity attached to it. Your dog identification should have all the essential contact information. In addition, you can choose to include the hotel, motel or the vacation house contact information.
6. If planning to stay in a motel, hotel, or guest house, it is always advisable to book in advance. It can be difficult to find accommodations that allow pets and spaces for dogs. Before booking your hotel, you have to confirm that the hotel is pet-friendly. Do not trust the online advertising that you have seen, because sometimes it is incorrect. Do not try to sneak a dog into a hotel that does not allow pets, it is not worth the trouble.
At the hotel, you can inform the front desk that you do not need maid service if you do not need the maid to come to your room. Personally, I always take my dog out of a walk and go for a good long distance while the maid cleans the room. After cleaning the room if I need to go somewhere without my dog, I will put the sign "Do not disturb" and I will leave the TV and then I will leave my dog in the room.
7. If you are on a long car journey, ensure to bring enough clean water and make enough stops to exercise your dog. When you let a dog get out of the car to get relief, be sure to clean up afterward.
8. Do not leave your dog alone in the car, particularly during the summer. It is only a matter of few minutes for a dog to suffer serious hypothermia. If you must leave your dog in the car, make sure that a family member stays with him or her.
9. Your puppy might experience anxiety while away from his environment. Therefore, it is recommended to recreate "home" when possible. In other words, feed your pup at the normal time with its usual food. Walk your dog at the normal time and, if possible, take the dog's bed. These familiarities will help relax your dog.
10. Finally, It is always advisable to bring your veterinarian's phone number with you. In case of emergency situation, this can prevent you from making an expensive trip to an unknown veterinarian. Many dogs find trips enjoyable and exciting experiences, but for some, it may be stressful and anxiety-ridden. Vacations can be a good time for the whole family, but it is important to make sure that your dog is safe, happy, and healthy while traveling.
